In Thai tradition the zodiac year changes at Songkran (around 13 April), not on 1 January; the Chinese calendar changes it at Lunar New Year. If you were born between January and early April, check the year before as well.

The Year of the Horse is the same zodiac year as this year. Some texts count this as a clash too, because it is a year when the owner's own chart is stirred up.
By tradition, people ease a clash by paying respect to Tai Sui, the deity of the year, making merit, performing a ritual to dispel bad luck and taking extra care over big decisions throughout the year.
Why years six apart are called a direct clash
The twelve zodiac years form a circle, so years six apart sit exactly opposite each other, like clock hands pointing in opposite directions. Chinese belief sees the opposite position as a direct collision; years three and nine apart stand at right angles and are affected less, while years four apart belong to the same triangle of friends and actually support each other.

What is a chong (clashing) year?
It is a belief taken from China: a year in which your zodiac animal stands in a clashing position with the animal of that year, making it a year for special caution. A direct clash is the year exactly opposite; a shared clash is a year at a right angle to it.
How is a direct clash different from a shared clash?
A direct clash is the year opposite on the zodiac wheel, six years apart, considered the strongest clash. A shared clash is three or nine years apart and considered less affected. The year owner is someone born in the same animal year as the current year, which some texts also count as a clash.
What should I do in a clashing year?
By tradition people pay respect to Tai Sui or ease the clash at a Chinese shrine, make merit, perform rituals to dispel bad luck and are careful over big decisions that year. The chong year is a belief with no evidence that it has any real effect; ordinary care is what helps for certain.
How is the zodiac year counted for people born early in the year?
The Thai zodiac year changes at Songkran, while the Chinese one changes at Lunar New Year, so people born between January and early April may be counted either way. If you are unsure, look at both years and take care for both.
