What Thai astrology looks at

Thai astrology has its roots in Indian astrology, blended with local beliefs until it became a system of its own. Its core is the position of the planets in the signs at the moment of birth, read against the twelve houses of the chart. A full chart needs an exact time of birth and an astrological almanac; this page gives the base chart that can be worked out from the date of birth alone, which is enough for reading character, element and choosing a name.

What information do I need for a Thai astrology chart?

At minimum your date of birth, which is enough for the weekday of birth in the Thai calendar, your sign, zodiac year, element and the letters to avoid. A time of birth is only needed for an exact ascendant to the degree, which is an advanced chart that needs a specialist.

Is the Thai sign different from the Western sign?

Yes. Thai astrology uses the sidereal system, in which the sun changes sign about two weeks later than in the Western system, so people born early in a month often get different signs in the two systems. This page uses the Thai sign-change dates that are commonly published.

What are kalakini letters, and must I avoid them?

They are groups of Thai letters that the taksa tradition considers unlucky for people born on a given weekday, and are mostly used when choosing names. It is a belief, not a rule; many people with kalakini letters in their names do perfectly well.

Does the zodiac year change on 1 January?

No. The Thai zodiac year changes at Songkran, so anyone born before 13 April still counts as the zodiac year before. The tool already calculates it this way.
