The formula this page uses

Base 1 starts from the weekday of birth, base 2 from the month of birth and base 3 from the position of the zodiac year. Each base is written as seven cells, counting 1 to 7 round from its starting number. Base 4 is base 1 plus base 2, base 5 is base 2 plus base 3, base 6 is base 1 plus base 3, base 7 is base 4 plus base 5, base 8 is base 5 plus base 6 and base 9 is base 7 plus base 8. Every result is wrapped back into the range 1 to 7.

Why do other schools give a different result?

There are several schools, and the way bases 4 to 9 are paired is not the same in every text. This page uses the widely published method and states its formula clearly; if you learned from a school that uses a different formula, a different result is normal.

Do I need my time of birth?

No. That is the strength of this method: the date of birth alone is enough, so it suits people who do not know their time of birth.
